چکیده

Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are administered as part of a general anesthetic to provide muscle relaxation during surgical procedures. Examples of commonly administered NMBAs are succinylcholine, rocuronium, vecuronium, and cisatracurium. Other medications administered during the surgical procedure may interact with NMBAs.1-12 For example, some antibiotics are known to potentiate the effects of NMBAs. Antibiotics are also commonly administered to surgical patients during the perioperative period as a prophylactic measure for postoperative surgical wound infections or are given intraoperatively as part of continued treatment or for a newly identified infection risk. Although most antibiotics work by altering the membrane permeability of bacterial cells, they can also affect the neuromuscular junction by causing neuromuscular blockade.1-13

Model to describe the degree of twitch potentiation during neuromuscular monitoring.

BACKGROUND Neuromuscular block is estimated by comparing the evoked peak twitch with a control value measured in the absence of neuromuscular block. In practice, this control value is often difficult to determine because repeated motor nerve stimulation enhances the evoked mechanical response of the corresponding muscle, resulting in an increased twitch response. This is known as twitch potenti...

Interactions between calcium entry blockers and vecuronium bromide in anaesthetized cats.

Possible interactions between three calcium entry blocking agents (nifedipine, verapamil and bepridil) and the non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, vecuronium bromide, were investigated in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. In i.v. doses which caused decreases in arterial pressure, the calcium entry blockers did not affect indirectly-elicited twitches of tibialis muscle, but did potentiat...

In vitro study of interactions between i.v. anaesthetics and neuromuscular blocking agents.

The interactions of four anaesthetic drugs (ketamine, propanidid, Althesin and methohexitone) with two neuromuscular blocking agents (suxamethonium and pancuronium) have been investigated. On the isolated rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation, all the anaesthetic drugs examined potentiated suxamethonium more than they potentiated pancuronium. The anticholinesterase agent, ecothiopate, had no ...

Use of sugammadex in parotid surgery: a case report

BACKGROUND Parotid surgery is a common ear, nose, and throat procedure. Facial nerve paralysis is the main feared complication following this surgery. To avoid this paralysis, intraoperative facial nerve monitoring is often used, but neuromuscular blocking agents interfere with this technique. Therefore, the neuromuscular blocking agent used should have a short duration of muscle relaxation. Wi...

Adenosine potentiation of neuromuscular blocking agents in guinea-pigs.

We have investigated the effects of adenosine i.v. on neuromuscular block induced by rocuronium, vecuronium and pipecuronium in an in vivo guinea-pig sciatic nerve-tibialis anterior preparation. The ED50 of each neuromuscular blocker was determined from cumulative log dose-response regression lines (n = 14). In separate experiments, adenosine 0.1 mg kg-1 min-1 or the same volume of 0.9% NaCl wa...
